Drones Under 250 Grams, What the Weight Limit Means for Rules in the US, EU and UK
Why do so many drones weigh 249 grams? Because 250 grams is where the rules change. Stay under it and in many countries you register less, train less and can fly in more places. Go over it and the paperwork starts.
But under 250 grams doesn’t mean no rules. Here’s what the line actually does in the US, the EU and the UK, as of late 2026. Rules change, so check your aviation authority before you fly.
United States
The FAA requires registration for drones that weigh 250 grams (0.55 lb) or more. Recreational pilots flying something lighter don’t need to register, and they don’t need Remote ID, the broadcast ID that’s been mandatory on registered drones since September 2023.
What still applies at any weight: every recreational pilot has to pass the free online TRUST test and carry proof. You stay at or below 400 feet, and controlled airspace near airports needs authorization through LAANC. Fly for money, even with a 135-gram drone, and you’re under Part 107, which means a remote pilot certificate, registration and Remote ID.
One warning. The DJI Mini 5 Pro is listed at 249.9 grams plus or minus 4, and reviewers measured 251 to 253 grams. Weigh yours. If it’s at 250 or more, register it. Bigger batteries do the same thing: the Plus batteries for the Mini 4 Pro and Mini 5 Pro both push them over the line.
European Union
Drones under 250 grams sold with a C0 class label fly in the A1 subcategory. That’s the most relaxed category. You may fly over uninvolved people, though never over crowds, up to 120 meters. No exam is needed for C0, beyond reading the manual.
The catch most people miss: if the drone has a camera, you must register as an operator, even under 250 grams. Only toys are exempt. You put your operator number on the drone. The minimum pilot age is 16, though member states may lower it.
United Kingdom
The UK changed its rules on January 1, 2026. The Flyer ID threshold, the free online test for pilots, dropped from 250 grams to 100 grams. A drone between 100 and 249 grams with a camera now needs both a Flyer ID and an Operator ID. Under 100 grams, neither is required, though a Flyer ID is recommended.
New drones now carry UK class marks, UK0 to UK6, and EU C-marks are accepted until the end of 2027. Remote ID applies from 2026 to UK1, UK2, UK3, UK5 and UK6 drones. Camera drones of 100 grams or more in UK0 join from January 2028.
Which sub-250g drone
For photography, the DJI Mini 4 Pro is the safely-under pick with a strong camera and full obstacle sensing, and the Mini 5 Pro is the better camera if you accept the weight question. For filming yourself there’s the DJI Flip, and the 151-gram DJI Neo 2. The Antigravity A1 hits 249 grams with its standard battery. On a budget, the Potensic Atom 2 is a 249-gram drone with a 4K camera.
Light drones have one shared weakness: wind. Under 250 grams, every gust shows. Check the forecast, and keep your first flights on calm days.
