Most Popular Canon RF Cameras and Lenses: The EOS R50 Leads and the Best-Selling Glass Is Cheap
Canon’s best-selling mirrorless camera is also one of its smallest and cheapest. In BCN’s 2025 point-of-sale ranking for Japan, which tracks real sales at major retailers, the Canon EOS R50 was the best-selling mirrorless camera of the year, across all brands. The EOS R10 was third. By mid-2026 the R50 was still number one in BCN’s monthly charts.
That shapes the whole RF system. Most Canon mirrorless owners shoot APS-C, buy one or two lenses, and care about price. The best-selling lenses reflect that.
Canon’s share of the Japanese mirrorless market was 27.4 percent in 2025, just 2.5 points behind Sony. The gap was nearly 10 points a year earlier.

The cameras people buy
Canon EOS R50: Japan’s number one mirrorless camera of 2025. Small, cheap, with a viewfinder and Canon’s subject-detection autofocus. It’s the default first camera for people stepping up from a phone.
Canon EOS R10: the R50 with a joystick, two dials and 15 fps bursts, for under $1,000. Third in Japan in 2025.
Canon EOS R50 V: the vlogging version of the R50, launched in March 2025, which has climbed into Japan’s monthly top ten in 2026.
Canon EOS R6 Mark II: the full-frame best seller, tenth among new cameras at Map Camera in 2025. Its successor, the R6 Mark III, arrived in November 2025 at $2,799, which has pushed Mark II prices down further.
Below these sit the R8, the cheapest way into Canon full frame, and the R7, the APS-C wildlife camera. The entry-level R100 is cheaper still, and limited in ways our review explains.
The lenses people buy
The RF 100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM was sixth among new lenses of all brands at Map Camera in 2025. At about $650 and 635 grams, it’s the first long lens for nearly every Canon owner. On an R50 or R7 it frames like a 640mm lens.
The RF 45mm F1.2 STM, launched in November 2025, went straight to third in the same ranking. It’s a cheap f/1.2 standard prime, and its arrival shows how much Canon buyers want fast glass at a low price.
The Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN for RF was the second best-selling lens in Japan in BCN’s mid-2026 data. Sigma only began making RF lenses in 2024, and its 18-50mm became the natural upgrade from the R50’s kit zoom almost overnight.
Full-frame shooters lean toward the RF 28-70mm F2.8 IS STM, the f/2.8 zoom at half the price of an L, and the RF 50mm F1.8 STM, Canon’s $199 fifty.
Combos that sell
R50 with the Sigma 18-50mm F2.8: the most popular upgrade path in Japan, and the best-value Canon kit you can build.
R10 or R7 with the RF 100-400mm: the budget wildlife kit.
R8 with the RF 28-70mm F2.8 IS STM: a light full-frame kit for weddings, events and travel.
R6 Mark II with the RF 24-105mm F4 L: the classic enthusiast pairing, now cheaper than ever.
If you’re starting fresh, the sales data points to one simple answer: an R50 and a better zoom than the one in the box.
