Canon RF 28-70mm F2.8 IS STM Review: A Weather-Sealed F2.8 Zoom for Under Half the Price of an L
For years, a fast f/2.8 standard zoom on Canon’s RF mount meant one thing: the big, expensive RF 24-70mm f/2.8 L. The Canon RF 28-70mm F2.8 IS STM, launched in September 2024 at $1,099, changed that. It’s compact, it’s stabilized, it’s sealed against weather to Canon’s L-series standard, and it costs less than half as much.
It’s the lens Canon owners had asked for, especially those with smaller bodies like the R8 and R6 Mark II, and one Sony and Nikon owners had long enjoyed from Tamron.
It weighs about 495 grams and takes a 67mm filter.

The stabilization advantage
This lens has optical stabilization rated at 5.5 stops on its own and up to 7.5 stops when paired with in-body stabilization. On the R8, which has no IBIS, that’s a big deal: you get steady handheld shots and smoother video. On bodies with IBIS, it pushes handheld shutter speeds very low.
Most third-party f/2.8 standard zooms skip stabilization entirely, so this is a real edge.
Optics and focus
Sharpness is very good in the center from f/2.8 across the range, and corners improve nicely stopped down. The optical design leans on in-camera corrections for distortion and vignetting, which Canon bodies apply automatically.
Autofocus uses a lead-screw STM motor. It’s quiet and accurate for stills and video, though not as fast as Canon’s L-series motors for tracking fast action. Focus breathing is low, good news for video.
Close focus is about 27 centimeters with autofocus, for a maximum magnification of 0.24x. Handy for details and food.
What you give up
28mm at the wide end, not 24mm. Indoors and in tight spaces, you’ll notice it.
The barrel retracts for storage and has to be twisted out to 28mm before you can shoot. Mildly annoying at first.
The front control ring doubles as the focus ring, with a switch to choose which. Some people prefer two separate rings.
And the lens hood doesn’t come in the box in some regions. Factor it in.
Who should buy it
Canon full-frame owners who want f/2.8 without the weight and price of the L lens. R8 owners who need stabilization in a lens. Wedding and event shooters who want a lighter backup zoom. Travelers who want one fast, sealed zoom that fits in a small bag.
If you need 24mm and the fastest autofocus, the RF 24-70mm f/2.8 L is still the pro choice. For everyone else, this one is the smarter buy.
