Sony FE 24-50mm F2.8 G Review: Sony's Smallest Full-Frame F2.8 Zoom Trades Range for Size

The Sony FE 24-50mm F2.8 G is a full-frame f/2.8 zoom made to be small. Sony announced it in February 2024 at about $1,100. It weighs 440 grams, and it’s the smallest f/2.8 standard zoom Sony makes. The trade is range: it stops at 50mm, where most standard zooms go to 70.

For travel and walking around, that size is the whole point. A narrow street of old townhouses, flower boxes and shop signs is classic 24mm to 50mm territory.

It’s designed to pair with the FE 16-25mm F2.8 G. Both take 67mm filters, and together they cover 16mm to 50mm at f/2.8 in less weight than one big zoom.

What it does well

It’s sharp in the center even at f/2.8, according to TechRadar and PetaPixel. Two linear motors focus quickly and quietly, and it supports focus breathing compensation on recent Sony bodies, which helps for video.

It focuses close, down to 19 centimeters at 24mm, giving about 1:3 magnification, good for food, flowers and details. There’s a declickable aperture ring, a focus-hold button and weather sealing with a fluorine coating. On a compact body like the A7C II, it balances perfectly.

What it doesn’t

The range is short. Going from 50mm to 70mm is the difference between a half-length portrait and a head-and-shoulders one, and PetaPixel and TechRadar both missed it. PetaPixel went as far as calling it a solution in search of a problem.

Background blur can look busy, with cat’s-eye shapes and bright-edged highlights. Corners are soft at 24mm wide open, and uncorrected distortion at 24mm is heavy, according to AP. There’s no optical stabilization, and focus breathing is noticeable without the camera’s compensation turned on.

Who should buy it

Travel shooters and video creators on small Sony bodies who want f/2.8 and a light bag, and who are happy at 50mm. Paired with the 16-25mm G, it’s a lovely compact kit.

For most people, though, the FE 20-70mm F4 G gives far more range for similar weight, and the Tamron 28-75mm G2 keeps f/2.8 to 75mm for less money. Our Sony holy trinity guide shows how these lenses fit together.
