Sony FE 20-70mm F4 G Review: The Extra 4mm That Makes It Sony's Best Everyday Zoom
The Sony FE 20-70mm F4 G looks like a small change on paper. Most standard zooms start at 24mm. This one starts at 20mm. In practice those 4 millimeters change how you shoot. Indoors, in narrow streets, in front of big buildings, you can step back without stepping back.
Sony announced it in January 2023 at $1,099. It weighs about 488 grams, uses a 72mm filter, and it’s become one of the most recommended everyday lenses for Sony full frame.
It also plays nicely with the creator side of Sony’s lineup. 20mm is wide enough to vlog at arm’s length, while 70mm is long enough for a tight portrait.

Why it works
Sharpness is very good across the zoom range from f/4, with only minor softness at the far edges at the wide end. Contrast and color match Sony’s G-series look.
Autofocus is fast and silent, driven by two XD linear motors. It tracks eyes well for stills and keeps focus smooth for video.
Close focus is excellent: 25 centimeters at the long end, giving 0.39x magnification. That’s close to half-macro, great for food, flowers and product shots.
Handling is a strong point. There’s an aperture ring with a de-click switch for smooth video changes, an AF/MF switch and two customizable focus-hold buttons. The lens is dust and moisture resistant with a fluorine coating on the front.
The tradeoffs
f/4 isn’t f/2.8. In dim light you’ll be at higher ISOs than with a 24-70mm f/2.8, and you get less background blur. Sony bodies handle high ISO well, so it’s usually fine, but it’s a trade.
There’s no optical stabilization. Sony’s in-body stabilization covers it on most bodies.
The zoom extends by about 4 centimeters at 70mm.
Who should buy it
Travel, landscape, architecture and street photographers. Vloggers who want one zoom that’s wide enough for selfies. A7C II and A7 IV owners who want a lighter, more versatile kit lens. Anyone who found 24mm just a bit too tight.
If low light and shallow depth of field matter more than width, choose the Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II or Tamron’s 28-75mm G2. If width is your thing, this is the lens to live with.
