Fujifilm XF 23mm F2.8 R WR Review: A 90-Gram Weather-Sealed Pancake

Fujifilm announced the XF 23mm F2.8 R WR on June 12, 2025 alongside the X-E5, at $499.95. It’s a pancake: 23mm long, about 90 grams, and sealed against weather. On X mount it frames like 35mm on full frame, the classic view of the X100 series.

That’s the point. Put it on a small Fujifilm body and you get something close to an X100 with interchangeable lenses. It comes in black or silver to match the camera.

A 35mm-equivalent lens sees the way you notice things on a walk: a couple sitting by a river, the quay, the bridge behind them, all in proportion.

Design

The optical formula is 8 elements in 6 groups with two aspherical elements. The aperture has 11 rounded blades, unusual on a small lens, and the filter thread is 39mm. Close focus is 20cm, for 0.15x magnification. The whole optical group moves to focus, driven by a DC motor.

There’s a proper aperture ring from f/2.8 to f/16 with an A position and a lock button. The mount is metal, and the lens is sealed at nine points and rated to -10°C. There’s no stabilization. Bought alone, it comes with a screw-in hood, which isn’t in the X-E5 kit.

How it performs

Photography Blog and Lenstip found the center very sharp, with low distortion and color fringing. The 11 blades give pleasant bokeh for a slow lens. Photography Blog found the edges soft wide open.

The motor is the weak point. Lenstip, Amateur Photographer and Photography Blog all found autofocus audible and slow by current standards, and Lenstip and Amateur Photographer saw strong focus breathing, so it’s not a video lens. The focus ring is narrow, the hood blocks filters, and raw files show vignetting. Lenstip thought the standalone price was too high.

Who should buy it

Owners of small Fujifilm bodies who want a pocketable 35mm-equivalent prime with weather sealing and an aperture ring. It suits the Fujifilm X-E5 it launched with, and the X-M5 and X-T50.

The XF 27mm F2.8 R WR is its closest sibling, with a slightly longer view. For faster autofocus and more light, the XF 23mm F2 R WR weighs 180 grams, and the XF 23mm F1.4 R LM WR is the optical best. The cheapest alternative is the TTArtisan AF 27mm F2.8, and the fixed-lens choice is the Fujifilm X100VI.
