Fujifilm XF 16-55mm F2.8 R LM WR II Review: Fuji's Pro Zoom Gets Smaller, Lighter and 40MP-Ready
Fuji’s original XF 16-55mm f/2.8 from 2015 was the pro standard zoom for X-mount: sharp, sealed and well built. It was also big and heavy for an APS-C lens, and it predated Fuji’s 40MP sensors. The Fujifilm XF 16-55mm F2.8 R LM WR II, announced in October 2024 at $1,199, fixes those problems at the same price.
It weighs about 410 grams, roughly 250 grams lighter than the original, and it’s 11 millimeters shorter. On an X-T5 or X-T50 it finally feels like it belongs.
The range gives the field of view of about 24-84mm on full frame. The classic working focal lengths, at a constant f/2.8.

Sharper for 40MP
Fuji designed the Mark II to resolve its 40MP X-Trans 5 HR sensor in the X-T5, X-H2 and X-T50. Sharpness is excellent across the frame at f/2.8 through most of the range. Contrast is high and flare control is good.
Eleven rounded aperture blades give smoother backgrounds than you’d expect from a zoom. Close focus is 30 centimeters across the range, for 0.21x magnification.
Faster and quieter
A linear motor replaces the original’s slower focus system. It’s fast, quiet and well suited to video and subject tracking on Fuji’s newer bodies.
There’s an aperture ring with an auto position and a click switch for smooth aperture changes during video, though some older bodies need a firmware update to use it. The lens is sealed at 12 points and rated to work down to minus 10°C. The 72mm filter thread doesn’t rotate, good news for polarizers.
What it doesn’t have
No optical stabilization. On bodies with IBIS, like the X-T5, X-H2 and X-S20, that’s fine. On the X-M5 or older bodies without IBIS, Tamron’s stabilized 17-70mm f/2.8 may suit you better.
It still extends as you zoom, by about 27 millimeters at 55mm.
At $1,199, it’s pricey next to third-party options like the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 and Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8.
Who should buy it
Fuji shooters who want one pro-grade standard zoom for weddings, events, travel and documentary work. Owners of 40MP bodies who want a zoom that keeps up with the sensor. Original 16-55mm owners tired of carrying the weight.
If size and price matter most, the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 is a third the weight and much cheaper. If you need stabilization, look at Tamron’s 17-70mm. For the best all-round zoom Fuji makes, this is it.
