Sony FE 50mm F1.4 GM Review: G Master Sharpness in a 516-Gram Fifty

A fast 50mm is a classic for a reason. It’s close to how we see, it works for portraits, street, events and everyday shooting, and at f/1.4 it gathers a lot of light. Sony’s f/1.2 G Master fifty is superb, and big and expensive. The Sony FE 50mm F1.4 GM, announced in February 2023 at $1,299, gives you most of that quality in a smaller, lighter lens: about 516 grams with a 67mm filter.

That size matters on Sony’s compact bodies like the A7C II and A7 V. The f/1.2 version can overwhelm them. This one balances.

Optics

Sharp from f/1.4, across the frame. Eyes in portraits are crisp wide open, even on a 61MP A7R V. Two extreme aspherical elements help control aberrations, so you get clean results with little fringing or coma, good news for night street shooting.

Eleven rounded aperture blades keep background highlights smooth and round. Bokeh is soft and pleasant, without the busy edges some fast fifties show.

Close focus is about 41 centimeters with autofocus, for 0.18x magnification.

Built for stills and video

Two XD linear motors drive focus quickly and silently. It keeps up with eye tracking and burst shooting, and focus pulls in video are smooth.

There’s an aperture ring with a de-click switch and an iris lock, an AF/MF switch and two customizable focus-hold buttons. The lens is dust and moisture resistant.

The competition

The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG DN Art is the obvious rival. It’s cheaper, optically excellent and a bit heavier. The Sony focuses faster and is smaller. Gordon Laing’s video review compares the two directly.

Sony’s own FE 50mm f/1.8 is tiny and cheap but slower, softer and much noisier to focus. The 50mm f/1.2 GM gives a touch more blur for a lot more money and weight.

The downsides

Price. $1,299 is a lot for a fifty, and street prices haven’t fallen far.

There’s no stabilization in the lens, which is normal for Sony primes since the bodies have IBIS.

Who should buy it

Sony shooters who want one premium prime for portraits, weddings, street and everyday work. Hybrid creators who want a fast, quiet lens for interviews and B-roll. Owners of compact bodies who found the f/1.2 GM too big.

If budget comes first, the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art gets you very close. If you want the best balance of size, speed and image quality in a Sony fifty, this is the one.
