The lens is what catches my eye first. In this photograph, a traveler holds a camera with a substantial zoom pointing down toward the ground, its deep petal hood hovering beside her striped trousers. A black Nikon strap hangs in a loose curve across her white T-shirt, beneath the small blue words “Dressed for a fashion show.” Pale pink sun sleeves cover her arms and the backs of her hands. Above it all, a broad woven visor curls around her face, throwing shade over her eyes while her dark hair falls behind her shoulders. The pale stone balustrade recedes diagonally into the background, with warm paving below and dark green foliage beyond. There is lovely texture in the weave of the visor, and a quiet contrast between the soft clothing and the rather purposeful equipment. This is travel photography in its everyday physical form: sunshine, walking, something interesting just outside the frame, and a camera that has to come along for all of it.
