Nikon Z 50mm F1.4 Review: A $500 Fast Fifty That Trades Some Sharpness for an Extra Stop

The Nikon Z 50mm f/1.4 is a fast fifty at a sensible price. Nikon announced it in September 2024 at $499.95. It sits between the slower but sharper Z 50mm f/1.8 S and the big, expensive Z 50mm f/1.2 S, and it weighs 420 grams.

A 50mm is the classic everyday lens for people in the street, close to how the eye sees. At f/1.4 it lets you separate someone from a busy square without the background disappearing completely.

It’s Nikon’s first f/1.4 fifty for Z mount, and a lot cheaper than the f/1.4 fifties from Sony and Canon, which both cost well over $1,000.

Video review: Dustin Abbott

Why it’s tempting

Value first. Dustin Abbott and Cameralabs both liked it as a first-party f/1.4 at a mid-tier price. It’s compact, about 100 grams lighter than Sony’s 50mm f/1.4 GM, with dust and drip resistance and a separate control ring.

Autofocus with a stepping motor is fast and reliable for stills and video, and Abbott found focus breathing well controlled. Distortion is low and flare is handled well. It takes 62mm filters.

Where it compromises

It’s softer wide open than the Z 50mm f/1.8 S, and lower in contrast. Both Abbott and Cameralabs said they prefer the f/1.8 S optically. Vignetting is heavy without correction, and there’s visible color fringing.

Coma is poor, so it’s not a good choice for astrophotography. Cameralabs found the bokeh nervous, with double outlines in busy backgrounds. Close-up performance is weak. And there’s no AF/MF switch or function button.

Who should buy it

Nikon shooters who want f/1.4 for low light and background blur, on a budget. On a Zf or Z5II, it’s a light and pleasant everyday lens.

If sharpness matters more than the extra stop, buy the Z 50mm f/1.8 S, one of the sharpest fifties ever made, as our most popular Nikon lenses guide notes. If you want the best, the Z 35mm f/1.2 S and Z 50mm f/1.2 S are Nikon’s flagship primes.
